Interview – Fflur Owen
What is the inspiration behind your graduate collection?
The honest rustic feel of my collection no-doubt was inspired by my rural upbringing in North Wales. My main interest is to embellish natural fibres to create aesthetically pleasing and desirable textures.
The collection was also fused with a romantic western theme combined with a collection of skulls elaborately decorated with Swarovski crystals.
Which up and coming designer do you like, and why?
My collection was recently flown out to Namibia for a photo shoot. Una Burke’s work was also chosen. Her work is amazing. I’d love to work with her. She creates amazing pieces out of sculptures leather pieces.
Who would you like to see wearing your designs?
Whilst I was creating this collection the model I had in mind was Kasia Struss. She is very natural and extremely beautiful. I love a very natural look, she is so elegant.
What brought you to become a designer?
Ever since I was a tiny little thing, I’ve always been crazy about designing. I always keep a little sketchbook and a digital camera in my bag in case I discover some new inspirations, or come across interesting ideas. When I was young, I used to design everything from crazy headpieces for my Barbie’s, to tree houses that I managed to persuade my father to build back at home in Wales. After spending a year on an art foundation course experimenting with all kinds of different materials, I discovered that my passion lie in designing garments and creating fashions.
Could you describe your personal style? And does it influence your creations?
My style depends on my mood, but I must admit that I’m a real cowgirl at heart. I LOVE cowboy boots! I think my personal style must influence my creations a bit. But I mostly design for beautiful slender models.
Where do you see yourself in a few years?
I’d love to get a sponsor so that I could create more of my won pieces. My dream is to have my very own label, and maybe some day exhibit in London Fashion Week.
